Bursary Awards 2010

TRC together with SINDA and Singapore Indian Education Trust has been presenting bursaries to needy students from Indian families for the past few years. The 3 main organizations have come together to ensure that our lesser-privileged students are not lacking in motivation and financial support in their efforts to educate themselves and be a better citizen and son/daughter to their Parents. Further, such cooperation will ensure that more students benefit and better management of our limited resources.

Tamils Representative Council (TRC) is an organization, dedicated to ensuring every Tamil child born in Singapore is not deprived of education merely because of financial difficulties. Educating our young to open them to new opportunities is a communal duty each of us carries.

For the Year 2010, TRC presented bursaries to a total of 105 Primary School students. This event was held on Saturday, 9.1.2010 at The Grassroots Club. More than $20,000.00 was given away.

The recipients had to satisfy the following criteria to receive the bursaries ranging from $100.00 to $250.00.

  • Student must be attending Primary School in the year 2009/2010.

  • Must be taking Tamil as 2nd Language

  • Nett family income (take-home pay) should not exceed $2000/-per month.

  • Must not be a recipient of any other bursary award.

The awards were presented by Mr Haj, Abdul Jaleel, PBM who is the Managing Director of MES Group of Companies and a well known patron of the Indian Community.

Parents of the recipients were grateful for the financial assistance given by TRC and other Tamil Community organizations. Such support helps to pay for the school fees and text books needed by the students.

Prior to event the parents and students were involved in a successful Motivation workshop on how parents can motivate their children rather than picking on their mistakes conducted by Ms Sarojini Pathmanathan, Senior Director of SINDA.

  • Apart from giving out bursaries, TRC is also involved in the following projects that are aimed at our children and to ensure that they excel in their studies.

  • Tuition Programme (More than 30,000 have benefited since 1983)

  • Enrichment Programmes

  • Raising Funds for the Kandasamy Education Trust Fund, which is used to present bursaries

  • Nominating students for scholarship awards for further studies – A Joint Programme with Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) and Modern Montessori International (MMI)

  • TRC Excellence Awards for Top Indian Students who have excelled in Tamil Language at PSLE, GCE ‘O’ and GCE ‘A’ Levels.

  • TRC Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, where members may take loans.

To date TRC has awarded more than S$100,000.00 to nearly 1000 students. Apart from this, TRC is looking at supplementing these awards with further financial assistance for deserving students and families. We are also exploring giving out study awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 for those aspiring to further their studies.
