Members Show Overwhelming Confidence on TRC Leadership
A record crowd of more than 120 members attended the recent TRC Annual General Meeting held on 16 July 2011. The large turnout showed the keen interest that members had in TRC and their eagerness to convey their support to the leadership that had been elected unopposed.
For more than eleven years in succession since 2000, the Management Council has been returned unopposed. The team under the able and efficient leadership of Dr R Theyvendran PBM has been managing TRC for the past 11 years and with the current mandate will continue to do so for the next two years.
TRC has in the past two years progressed successfully. 2010 was a successful year for TRC. In March, it raised more than $125,000 during the launch of the first local Tamil movie, “Gurushetram”. In September, TRC was tasked to coordinate and organize the 75th Anniversary celebrations for Tamil Murasu. The grand cultural fiesta held at the National University Cultural Centre was witnessed by President S R Nathan, various Indian Ministers like Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Mr S Shanmugam, Mr S Iswaran and former political leaders, Mr S Dhanabalan, Mr S Chandra Das and many other Community leaders. More than 1,500 Singaporeans were also present to support and watch the event, which was also recorded and telecast in full by Vasantham Central. In recent times there have been calls for Dr Theyvendran and his team to step down and allow for new leaders to take over the organization. The current leaders understand that no one man is indispensable and were willing to step down if committed and able members volunteer themselves to take over and run the organization. However, all those who had been calling for a change turned out to be mere critics and did not even submit nomination forms.
TRC has always been transparent on the way the organization has been managed and attempts were made to engage those interested to come forward and stand for elections and convince the general members on their ability to manage TRC.
Yet, no one turned up to provide an alternate voice. There were even attempts to disrupt the AGM by some who had resorted to sending emails to members requesting to raise unnecessary questions. However the strong support from members ensured that there was no disruption of the AGM at all. Rightful members attended the AGM and no fully paid-up member was denied entry.
TRC will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2012 and has planned to hold a series of events to remember the occasion and record its history. TRC has also taken steps to review its strategic plans and drawn up specific action plans which it will be implementing soon. There will also be more interaction between TRC and its Affiliates. In addition TRC will be embarking on a major effort to review its Constitution and Objectives to ensure alignment with the current needs of its members and the Community.
TRC has continued to change within and has been one of the first organizations to identify and bring in more youths and young professionals into its Management Council. The current Management Council has 2 lawyers, 2 IT professionals, a number of educationists, entrepreneurs and financial experts. In the coming year TRC will be identifying more such persons and bring them into the various sub committees and resource groups. There are also plans to work more closely with SINDA, Narpani, NLB and MOE and bring about a concerted effort to improve the educational, financial and social status of the Tamils in Singapore.
Together, with the continued support of its Members, Affiliates, Partner Organisations and key Government Departments, we hope to do our part in Nation Building and provide support to the Tamil Community and achieve its mission of being the ‘Leading Tamil Organisation in Singapore’.
